Chapter 11: The Woman Who Never Stopped Fighting

The message stayed on the screen.

My mother’s name.

Her words.

A voice from someone I thought was gone forever.

Marcus sat down slowly.

Like his legs couldn’t hold him anymore.

“Maya…”

I couldn’t look at him.

Because for the first time, I wasn’t only hurt.

I was angry.

Not the kind of anger that screamed.

The kind that sat quietly in your chest and asked questions.

How many birthdays had she missed?

How many times had she tried to reach me?

How many times had I believed she didn’t care?

Vanessa whispered:

“She kept it.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“The truth.””

Vanessa stared at the phone.

“Your mother always kept evidence.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not everything.””

The message remained unopened.

Marcus hesitated.

Then he handed the phone to me.

“You should read it.””

My fingers trembled as I touched the screen.

The message opened.

*Maya,*

*If you are reading this, you are old enough to know the truth.*

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

*I never left because I stopped loving you. I left because I believed staying would hurt you more.*

A tear fell onto the phone.

*Your father believed things that weren’t true. Vanessa made choices she regrets. But the biggest secret is something neither of them wanted you to know.*

I looked up.

Everyone was waiting.

I continued.

*The night I left, I didn’t leave alone.*

My heart raced.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

I kept reading.

*I had someone helping me. Someone who knew what was happening inside your home.*

A new line appeared.

*Someone who was there before Vanessa entered our family.*

I looked at Marcus.

His face changed.

Like he understood something.

“Who?””

I kept reading.

*His name is Daniel.*

Marcus stood immediately.

“What?””

The reaction shocked me.

“Dad?””

He looked terrified.

“Daniel?””

Vanessa’s face changed too.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“You know him.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Yes.””

The kitchen fell silent.

I looked at both of them.

“Who is Daniel?””

Marcus sat back down.

“He was my best friend.””

The answer made no sense.

“Was?””

Marcus nodded.

“Before everything happened.””

The phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This one from my mother.

*Ask your father why Daniel disappeared after trying to help me.*

Marcus looked away.

I felt my heartbeat speed up.

“What happened?””

My father rubbed his face.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“You do.””

Marcus looked at her.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Her voice was quiet.

“You just convinced yourself you didn’t.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Maya deserves the whole story.””

I hated that sentence.

Because every time someone said it, another piece of my life collapsed.

Vanessa continued.

“Daniel found out I was manipulating things.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“He found the letters.””

My eyes widened.

“The letters Mom wrote?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He found them before I destroyed them.””

Marcus stood.

“Where are they?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s a lie.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I lost them.””

Marcus stared.

“You lost them?””

She nodded.

“Daniel took them.””

I looked at the phone.

My mother’s message suddenly made sense.

Someone had been fighting for her.

Someone had been trying to get the truth to me.

Marcus grabbed the phone.

The screen showed another attachment.

A scanned document.

A letter.

The title made my hands go cold.

*“To Maya, when she is old enough.””*

My mother’s handwriting.

My name.

I couldn’t breathe.

“Open it,” I whispered.

Marcus looked at me.

“You sure?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He opened the letter.

The first line appeared.

And before anyone could read further, Vanessa whispered:

“No…”

Everyone looked at her.

Because she wasn’t afraid anymore.

She looked devastated.

Like she knew exactly what that letter would reveal.

May you like

And maybe worse…

She knew what it would reveal about her.
