Chapter 4: The Voice Behind the Door
The recording started with a single breath.
Not words.
Not an explanation.
Just Vanessa breathing.
And somehow, that was worse.
The entire kitchen became silent as the cracked phone rested in Marcus’s hand. The bright lights above the marble island made everything look normal, almost peaceful.
But nothing about that moment was peaceful.
I stood behind my father, my cheek still burning, my hands shaking.
Lily stayed beside me, holding onto my sleeve.
Vanessa stood across from us.
For the first time since she entered our lives, she looked small.
“Marcus,” she whispered.
He didn’t look at her.
“Listen.””
The recording continued.
A few seconds of silence.
Then my own voice came through the speaker.
Quiet.
Afraid.
“Vanessa, I don’t want to do this.””
My father’s face changed immediately.
Because he knew my voice.
He knew the difference between my normal voice and the voice I used when I was scared.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Marcus, turn it off.””
“No.””
The word was firm.
The recording continued.
Vanessa’s voice came next.
Cold.
Calm.
“You’re making this harder than it needs to be, Maya.””
I closed my eyes.
Hearing it again felt like being pulled back into that moment.
The kitchen.
The fear.
The feeling that nobody would believe me.
Marcus looked at me.
Then back at the phone.
The recording played.
“You’re going to tell your father exactly what I told you.””
My fingers tightened around my sweatshirt.
Lily looked up at me.
She remembered.
She had heard it before.
Vanessa’s voice continued.
“And if you don’t, you know what happens.””
Marcus paused the recording.
The kitchen went silent again.
“What happens?”” he asked.
Nobody answered.
Vanessa’s face was pale.
“Maya misunderstood.””
Marcus slowly turned toward her.
“Did she?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“She’s emotional. She’s sixteen.””
I felt anger rise inside me.
“You always do that.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Do what?””
“Make everyone think I’m too young to know what’s happening.””
Marcus stared at his wife.
“Let her speak.””
That sentence shocked me.
Because for so long, I had forgotten what it felt like to have someone actually say that.
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You’re choosing her over me?””
Marcus looked at her.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I’m choosing the truth.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because part of me had been waiting for them for years.
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“The truth?””
She pointed at the phone.
“You have no idea what that recording proves.””
Marcus picked up the phone again.
“Then let’s hear the rest.””
He pressed play.
The recording continued.
Vanessa’s voice filled the room.
“You’re going to tell Marcus you were angry. You’re going to tell him you made everything up because you wanted attention.””
My stomach twisted.
I remembered that moment.
I remembered sitting at the kitchen table, staring at my broken phone, wondering if I should just do what she wanted.
Because Vanessa had spent months convincing me that nobody would believe me.
The recording continued.
“And you’re going to apologize to me.””
My voice shook.
“For what?””
A pause.
Then Vanessa answered.
“For making me look like the bad person.””
Marcus stopped breathing for a second.
Even Vanessa looked like she wanted to disappear.
Lily whispered:
“She told Maya to lie.””
Nobody corrected her.
Because everyone knew.
Marcus lowered the phone.
“Why?””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
“Why would you make my daughter say that?””
“I was trying to discipline her.””
“Discipline?””
His voice rose.
“You slapped her.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“I lost control for one second.””
The words came out before she could stop them.
Everyone froze.
Marcus stared at her.
“You just admitted it.””
Vanessa’s mouth closed.
She looked away.
I watched my father’s face.
The disappointment there hurt more than anger.
Because Marcus was a man who always believed he could fix things.
But some things couldn’t be fixed by pretending they weren’t broken.
Vanessa took a step back.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Marcus looked at her.
“No. I made a mistake a long time ago.””
My heart stopped.
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Before Marcus could answer, something happened.
The phone screen flashed.
A notification appeared.
Another recording.
Not one from tonight.
A saved file.
The title appeared across the cracked screen.
And Vanessa saw it.
Her entire body went still.
Marcus looked down.
“What is this?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Don’t open that.””
Marcus looked at the file name.
Then at her.
“Why not?””
She didn’t answer.
Because the name on the screen wasn’t mine.
It wasn’t Lily’s.
It was hers.
*“Vanessa - conversation with Marcus.””*
And beneath it was a date.
A date from two years earlier.
Marcus slowly looked up.
“Why was this recorded?””
Vanessa’s face lost all color.
May you like
And for the first time that night, she wasn’t afraid of losing control.
She was afraid of what she had already revealed.
