Chapter 14: The Man Who Knew Everything

The entire kitchen went silent.

“He’s outside?””

Marcus repeated the words like he didn’t understand them.

Sofia answered quietly.

“Yes.””

My father walked toward the window.

The bright kitchen lights reflected against the glass.

Outside was only darkness.

The backyard.

The driveway.

The quiet street.

Nothing moved.

“How long?”” Marcus asked.

Sofia hesitated.

“Long enough.””

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

Marcus noticed.

“You knew he was coming.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn’t.””

“Then why are you scared?””

She didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t have one.

Marcus walked toward the front door.

I followed.

“Maya, stay here.””

I stopped.

The old version of me would have listened.

The old version of me would have stayed silent.

But I wasn’t that girl anymore.

“No.””

Marcus looked at me.

“I’m not leaving you alone again.””

The sentence hurt.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what he meant.

Not tonight.

Not ever.

He nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

Lily grabbed my hand.

“Are we safe?””

I looked at her.

I didn’t know.

But I squeezed her fingers.

“We’re together.””

Marcus opened the door.

A man stood outside.

Older than I expected.

Tired.

Carrying years on his face.

But the second Marcus saw him, he knew.

“Daniel.””

The man looked at him.

“Marcus.””

No anger.

No greeting.

Just two people who had lost a decade.

Daniel looked past him.

His eyes landed on me.

“Maya.””

My heart raced.

“How do you know me?””

He smiled sadly.

“Because I knew you before you knew yourself.””

The words confused me.

He stepped inside.

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

And everything changed.

The fear on her face returned.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I should have been here years ago.””

Marcus closed the door.

“Explain.””

Daniel nodded.

“I will.””

He looked at me.

“But she deserves the truth first.””

I waited.

Daniel took a breath.

“Your mother didn’t just leave.””

I already knew that.

But hearing someone else say it made it real.

“She ran.””

“From Vanessa?””

He nodded.

“But not because Vanessa scared her.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Because she was afraid of what would happen if Marcus found out the truth too late.””

My father looked confused.

“What truth?””

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

My name was written across the front.

My hands started shaking.

“What is that?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Something your mother wanted you to have.””

Marcus stared.

“Where did you get that?””

“Your wife gave it to me.””

My heart stopped.

“My mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“She trusted me to keep it safe.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

She stopped.

Marcus looked at the envelope.

“Why didn’t you give it to her?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because your wife asked me not to.””

Everyone froze.

“My wife?””

“Not Vanessa.””

Daniel’s eyes softened.

“Your first wife.””

The words felt like a door opening.

A door that had been locked for ten years.

Daniel handed me the envelope.

I touched the paper.

My mother’s handwriting.

Again.

My name.

Again.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

But there was also something else.

A photograph.

I looked at it.

And my entire body went cold.

It was a picture of my mother.

Holding a baby.

Not me.

A baby I had never seen before.

Marcus saw it.

His face changed.

“No…”

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He stared at the photograph.

Then whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No.””

A pause.

“It’s the truth.””

My hands trembled.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel said:

“Maya…”

He looked at me.

“That’s your brother.””

The room stopped.

My entire life stopped.

Because I had spent years believing I was the only child.

The only daughter.

The only person left behind.

But I wasn’t.

May you like

And somehow, everyone knew.

Everyone except me.
