Chapter 6: The Truth They Buried

The kitchen had never felt so unfamiliar.

It was the same place where we ate breakfast.

The same place where Lily did homework at the island.

The same place where Marcus used to make pancakes every Sunday morning.

But that night, it felt like a courtroom.

And everyone was waiting for someone to confess.

I looked at my father.

“Tell me.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Maya…”

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“I spent years thinking I was the problem.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I spent years thinking Mom left because I wasn’t enough.””

My father’s expression broke.

“That’s not true.””

“Then what is?””

Silence.

I stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Marcus looked at the phone.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“I should have told you.””

The words hurt.

Because they meant he had known.

“You knew?””

He swallowed.

“I knew part of it.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I made choices I regret.””

Vanessa immediately stepped in.

“Marcus, don’t put everything on yourself.””

He looked at her.

“You don’t get to do that.””

The room went quiet.

“You don’t get to control the story anymore.””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“I was protecting this family.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

I watched Vanessa’s face change.

Because that was the first time someone said it directly.

Not hinted.

Not suggested.

Said it.

I wiped my eyes.

“What happened to Mom?””

Marcus took a long breath.

“When your mother left…”

He stopped.

Like saying the words physically hurt.

“When your mother left, I told you she needed time.””

I nodded slowly.

“That’s what you said.””

“It wasn’t the whole truth.””

My chest tightened.

Vanessa whispered:

“Marcus.””

He ignored her.

“Your mother found out something.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“She found out Vanessa had been lying to both of us.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

I stared at her.

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

Because some part of me still couldn’t believe it.

Marcus continued.

“Your mother wanted to confront her.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then tell her.””

Vanessa went silent.

Marcus looked at me.

“She left because she was scared.””

“Of Vanessa?””

He nodded.

My heart dropped.

Lily moved closer to me.

“What did Vanessa do?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa suddenly laughed.

A quiet, bitter laugh.

“You all think I’m the villain.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Aren’t you?””

Her eyes moved toward me.

“I made mistakes.””

I stared at her.

“Mistakes?””

The word felt impossible.

“You hurt me.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

The admission shocked everyone.

Even Marcus.

Vanessa took a breath.

“I know I went too far.””

“Too far?””

My voice cracked.

“You slapped me.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

And for a second, I saw something behind her anger.

Panic.

“I was trying to stop everything from falling apart.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You were trying to stop the truth.””

Vanessa didn’t deny it.

That was the worst part.

Marcus picked up the phone again.

“There’s still more on this recording.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

He pressed play.

The old recording continued.

Vanessa’s voice filled the kitchen.

“If Maya knows, she’ll hate you.””

Marcus’s younger voice answered.

“She has a right to know.””

Then Vanessa said something that made the entire room freeze.

Something that changed the way I looked at everything.

“I was there when your daughter’s mother left.””

Marcus stopped the recording.

Too late.

The words were already out.

I stared at Vanessa.

“What?””

She looked at me.

And I saw it.

She knew there was no going back.

Marcus’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Maya…”

I couldn’t hear him.

I couldn’t hear anything except those words.

She was there.

When Mom left.

Not a stranger.

Not someone who heard a story later.

She was there.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why?””

My voice barely existed.

“Why were you there?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she answered, the phone vibrated in Marcus’s hand.

A new notification appeared.

A message.

From an unknown number.

Marcus looked down.

Then his face changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t respond.

“Dad?””

Slowly, he turned the screen toward us.

The message had only one sentence.

May you like

And it came with an attachment.

*“If Maya finally knows the truth, she deserves to see what happened that night.””*
