Chapter 7: The File From The Past
Nobody touched the phone.
Not Marcus.
Not Vanessa.
Not me.
The message sat there on the cracked screen, glowing beneath the bright kitchen lights.
A stranger’s words.
A hidden truth.
A piece of the past that someone had been waiting years to reveal.
Lily looked up at my father.
“Dad… who sent that?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed fixed on the screen.
I had never seen him look that shaken.
Not when he lost his job years ago.
Not when our house flooded.
Not even when my grandmother passed away.
This was different.
This was fear.
“Marcus,” Vanessa whispered.
He finally looked at her.
And something in his expression changed.
“You knew this would happen.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“No.””
“You knew someone could expose this.””
“No.””
“Then why are you scared?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I watched the woman who had always controlled every conversation suddenly struggle to find words.
My father tapped the attachment.
A video file appeared.
No title.
No date.
Just a small gray box waiting to be opened.
“Maya,” Marcus said quietly.
I looked at him.
“Do you want to see this?””
The question surprised me.
Because he wasn’t deciding for me.
He was asking.
For the first time in years, someone was giving me a choice.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
Then I looked at Marcus.
“Play it.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“No.””
My father didn’t move.
“Maya needs to know.””
Vanessa’s voice became sharper.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Neither did I when I trusted you.””
The words hit her.
She stepped back.
Marcus pressed the file.
The phone screen went black for a second.
Then the video loaded.
The kitchen remained silent.
The first thing we heard was a woman’s voice.
My mother’s voice.
I froze.
I hadn’t heard it clearly in years.
Not a memory.
Not an old voicemail.
Her actual voice.
“Maya is my daughter too, Vanessa.””
My knees almost gave out.
Lily grabbed my arm.
“Your mom?””
I couldn’t answer.
The video continued.
The image was shaky, recorded from somewhere inside a house.
I couldn’t see faces yet.
Only shadows.
My mother’s voice trembled.
“You can’t keep doing this.””
Vanessa answered.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
My entire body went cold.
Because it was the same voice.
The same calm, controlled voice she used when she was lying.
My mother said:
“I know what you told Marcus.””
A pause.
Then Vanessa replied:
“And what exactly do you think you know?””
The video shook.
Someone moved the camera.
Then my mother appeared.
Older.
Younger than I remembered.
Her face filled the screen.
And behind her stood Vanessa.
My stepmother.
The person who had been telling everyone she was trying to replace the family she loved.
She had been there.
With my mother.
My mother looked exhausted.
“Tell me the truth.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You’re being dramatic.””
“No.””
My mother shook her head.
“I’m done being quiet.””
The words hit me.
Because suddenly I realized where I got that from.
My mother continued.
“You told Marcus that Maya needed a stable mother figure.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“You told him I was unstable.””
My father’s face changed.
I looked at him.
He whispered:
“No…”
The video continued.
Vanessa sighed.
“I did what I had to do.””
My mother stared at her.
“You lied.””
Vanessa’s voice became colder.
“I protected this family.””
My mother laughed sadly.
“From what?””
Silence.
Then Vanessa said:
“From you.””
The room went still.
Marcus looked like he couldn’t breathe.
The video ended suddenly.
No explanation.
No goodbye.
Just a black screen.
I stared at the phone.
“That’s it?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You were trying to make her leave?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
But I didn’t know if they were real.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I understand enough.””
Marcus put the phone down.
His hands were trembling.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“I swear there is more to this.””
“There always is with you.””
The sentence was quiet.
But it broke something.
Vanessa looked away.
Then suddenly Lily spoke.
“Dad?””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
Lily pointed at the phone.
“There’s another message.””
Everyone looked down.
Another notification had appeared.
Another file.
This one had a name.
A name that made Vanessa completely freeze.
*“The night Maya’s mother left.””*
Marcus stared at it.
Then he looked at me.
I could barely breathe.
Because I already knew.
Whatever happened that night…
Whatever made my mother walk away…
May you like
The answer was inside that file.
And Vanessa knew it.
