Chapter 9: The Daughter Left Behind
The question stayed in the kitchen.
Why didn’t Mom take me?
Nobody moved.
Nobody looked away.
Marcus stood frozen beside the marble island, still holding the phone.
Vanessa watched him.
Waiting.
Like she had saved that question for years.
Like she knew exactly where to push.
I looked at my father.
“Dad.””
He finally looked at me.
And I saw it.
The pain.
The guilt.
The thing he had been hiding.
“Tell me.””
Marcus took a breath.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
My eyes filled.
“Everyone says that.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
“Vanessa said she was protecting us. You said you were protecting me. Mom probably thought she was protecting me.””
My voice cracked.
“But nobody ever asked what I wanted.””
Marcus looked down.
“You’re right.””
That hurt.
Because I didn’t want him to agree.
I wanted him to say everything was a misunderstanding.
I wanted him to fix it.
But some things were too broken.
“I need to know,” I whispered.
Marcus nodded.
“You do.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I can explain.””
Marcus looked at her.
“No.””
She stopped.
“No?””
“No more explaining for her.””
His voice was calm.
“Maya deserves the truth from me.””
For once, Vanessa had nothing to say.
Marcus sat the phone down.
Then he leaned against the counter.
“When your mother left, she wanted to take you.””
My heart stopped.
“But I didn’t let her.””
The words felt like a punch.
I stared at him.
“You didn’t let her?””
He closed his eyes.
“I thought she was making a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
“I believed everything Vanessa told me.””
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus continued.
“She convinced me your mother was unstable. That she was angry. That she would take you away and disappear.””
My hands shook.
“So you chose.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
A tear rolled down his face.
“I chose wrong.””
The kitchen became quiet.
I looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Marcus.
“Did Mom try to come back?””
His silence answered before he spoke.
“Yes.””
My breath caught.
“How many times?””
“Three.””
I felt dizzy.
“Three?””
Marcus nodded.
“She called. She wrote letters.””
My eyes moved toward Vanessa.
The stolen letters.
“She tried.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
The answer was honest.
And painful.
Marcus looked at me.
“I told myself I was giving you stability.””
He swallowed.
“But really, I was afraid of admitting I had been manipulated.””
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“Marcus.””
He looked at her.
“No.””
The word was final.
She stopped.
“You don’t get to rewrite everything now.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“I loved you.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Maybe you did.””
The answer surprised everyone.
“But love doesn’t look like this.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You think I’m the only reason your family fell apart?””
I said nothing.
Because I knew she wanted a reaction.
She wanted anger.
She wanted chaos.
But I was tired.
Tired of playing the role she created for me.
Marcus picked up the phone.
“There’s one more thing.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“What?””
He looked at the screen.
“The person who sent these files.””
A message notification appeared.
Another text.
Marcus opened it.
The message was short.
*“She deserves to know who really saved her.””*
Below it was another attachment.
A photograph.
Marcus opened it.
And everyone leaned closer.
The picture showed a little girl.
Me.
Six years old.
Standing beside my mother.
But that wasn’t what shocked me.
It was the person holding the camera.
Someone standing in the background.
Someone I recognized.
Vanessa.
But she wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t threatening.
She was crying.
Lily looked confused.
“Why is she crying?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus zoomed in.
Behind the photo was a message.
*“Ask Vanessa why she kept this picture hidden.””*
Vanessa stepped back.
“No.””
My father looked at her.
“What?””
Her voice became desperate.
“Marcus, don’t.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
And for the first time, I didn’t see the woman who scared me.
I saw someone who had been carrying a secret too big to hide.
“I wasn’t the one who left your mother.””
The words made my heart stop.
Marcus looked confused.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Then at the phone.
Then whispered:
“Your mother didn’t leave because of me.””
A pause.
“She left because of something your father did.””
The kitchen went silent.
Marcus’s face changed.
And I knew.
May you like
Whatever came next…
It would destroy the last version of my family I still believed in.
