Chapter 8: The Night Everything Changed

Marcus didn’t open the second file immediately.

He just stood there.

Holding the phone.

Looking older than he had five minutes before.

I understood then.

The truth wasn’t always something people wanted.

Sometimes people spent years building walls because they were afraid of what would happen when those walls came down.

But those walls had fallen.

And there was no rebuilding them.

“Open it,” I said.

Marcus looked at me.

“Maya…”

“I need to know.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology almost hurt more.

Because I believed him.

And somehow that made everything harder.

He opened the file.

The screen changed.

This video was clearer.

The date appeared.

Ten years earlier.

I felt my breath catch.

I was six years old.

A little girl who still believed adults always told the truth.

The video started.

The camera was pointed toward a living room.

My mother was packing a bag.

My heart stopped.

She was crying.

A younger Marcus stood near the doorway.

“You’re really leaving?””

My mother looked at him.

“I don’t know what else to do.””

“You’re taking Maya?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I’m trying to protect her.””

I looked at my father.

He covered his mouth.

Because he was watching something he had never seen.

The video continued.

My mother turned.

And Vanessa walked into the room.

Younger.

Confident.

Like she already belonged there.

My hands went cold.

Vanessa in the present looked away.

My mother said:

“This ends tonight.””

Vanessa sighed.

“You’re still blaming me.””

“You know what you did.””

“What did I do?””

“You convinced Marcus that I was the problem.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

The younger version of him on the screen looked confused.

“I don’t understand.””

My mother turned toward him.

“That’s because she wanted you confused.””

The video shook.

Someone holding the camera moved.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“You’re making him choose.””

My mother answered:

“No. I’m asking him to see.””

The words were simple.

But they carried years of pain.

Marcus whispered:

“I should have listened.””

Nobody responded.

The video continued.

Vanessa stepped closer to my mother.

“You’re going to regret this.””

My mother didn’t move.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

Vanessa smiled.

“It’s advice.””

I felt sick.

Because it sounded exactly like her.

The same way she spoke to me.

The same hidden threat beneath polite words.

Then Marcus’s younger voice asked:

“Why are you both fighting?””

My mother looked at him.

“Ask her what she told you about me.””

Silence.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

The video paused for a moment.

Then Vanessa said:

“I told him the truth.””

My mother shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed toward the hallway.

“Tell him about the letters.””

My father suddenly looked up.

“Letters?””

Vanessa went still.

The video continued.

“What letters?”” younger Marcus asked.

My mother looked at him.

“The ones she hid from you.””

My heart raced.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What letters?””

The Vanessa in the kitchen didn’t answer.

The Vanessa on the video did.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

My mother stepped closer.

“I wrote to him.””

Marcus froze.

“I never got them.””

“No.””

My mother looked at Vanessa.

“Because she took them.””

The kitchen became silent.

I stared at Vanessa.

“You stole Mom’s letters?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

Not guilt.

Anger.

“You have no idea what those letters said.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Did you?””

She didn’t answer.

And again, silence became the confession.

The video continued.

My mother picked up her bag.

“I wanted my daughter to grow up knowing both parents loved her.””

She looked at Marcus.

“But you made your choice.””

Marcus’s younger voice cracked.

“Wait.””

My mother stopped.

Then she said something that made my entire body freeze.

“She will find out someday.””

The video ended.

No warning.

No explanation.

Just darkness.

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus whispered:

“She was trying to tell me.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He looked devastated.

“She tried to tell me.””

Vanessa suddenly moved.

“Marcus, listen—”

“No.””

His voice was louder.

“You lied about the letters.””

“I was protecting you.””

“You stole messages from my wife.””

“I was protecting this family!””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You were destroying it.””

Vanessa looked at me.

And something in her expression changed.

The fear disappeared.

Something colder replaced it.

“Maya.””

I stepped back.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“You really want the truth?””

I stared at her.

“Yes.””

She nodded slowly.

“Then ask your father why your mother didn’t take you with her.””

The words hit the room like an explosion.

Marcus froze.

I turned toward him.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

And that silence scared me more than anything.

Because there was still one secret left.

May you like

The biggest one.

Why did my mother leave without me?
