Chapter 13: The Woman Who Held The Final Piece
The message from Sofia stayed on the phone screen.
One sentence.
One warning.
One promise.
*“Maya, I’m sorry I waited this long. But your mother’s final secret is about to come out.””*
Nobody spoke.
The kitchen that had once been filled with arguments and accusations was now filled with something heavier.
Fear.
I looked at Vanessa.
For the first time, she wasn’t trying to control the room.
She was waiting.
Waiting for something worse than what had already happened.
“Who is Sofia?”” I asked.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You answer.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“She was your mother’s older sister.””
“And?””
“And she hated me.””
I almost laughed.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because she knew what I did.””
The answer was quiet.
But it carried the weight of years.
Marcus took the phone from the island.
“We need to call her.””
Vanessa immediately looked up.
“No.””
The word came too fast.
Everyone noticed.
Marcus stared at her.
“Why not?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I stepped closer.
“You’re still hiding something.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“You are.””
My voice was stronger than I expected.
“You always do this. You wait until someone finds out, then you admit only the part you can’t hide anymore.””
Vanessa looked at me.
And for once, she didn’t argue.
Because I was right.
Marcus unlocked the phone.
The number was already there.
A contact.
Saved.
*Sofia Bennett.*
My mother’s sister.
Someone who had been close enough to know the truth.
Someone who had waited ten years.
Marcus pressed call.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then a woman answered.
“Hello?””
My heart stopped.
Because even though I had never heard her voice before, there was something familiar.
Something in the way she spoke.
“Maya?””
I froze.
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then a shaky breath.
“Oh my God.””
I heard crying.
“I never thought I’d hear your voice.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“This is Marcus.””
The silence on the other end changed.
“Marcus.””
The way she said his name made the room colder.
“You finally know.””
My father closed his eyes.
“Know what?””
Sofia’s voice broke.
“Everything.””
Vanessa turned away.
I noticed.
And so did Marcus.
“Sofia,” he said, “we need answers.””
“You do.””
She took a breath.
“But Maya needs the truth from me.””
I held the phone closer.
“Tell me.””
A long silence followed.
Then Sofia spoke.
“Your mother didn’t leave because she wanted a new life.””
My throat tightened.
“I know.””
“No, Maya.””
Her voice became softer.
“You don’t know everything.””
The words made my stomach drop.
“What else is there?””
Sofia hesitated.
Then said:
“Your mother left because she discovered Marcus was being set up.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Set up?””
“Yes.””
“By who?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone already knew.
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
Sofia heard her.
“You’re there.””
The color drained from Vanessa’s face.
“You knew?””
“I knew from the beginning.””
Marcus stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Sofia continued.
“Vanessa didn’t just want your wife gone.””
She paused.
“She wanted control of everything.””
I looked at Vanessa.
My father’s face hardened.
“What does that mean?””
Sofia explained.
“She had been slowly convincing you that your wife was unstable. But she was also creating evidence.””
Marcus went still.
“What evidence?””
“Messages. Arguments. Recordings taken out of context.””
I felt sick.
The same thing she tried to do to me.
“She was building a story.””
Sofia continued.
“A story where your wife looked dangerous and Vanessa looked like the only person who could save your family.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You were preparing to replace her.””
Vanessa started crying.
“I didn’t plan everything.””
Sofia’s voice sharpened.
“But you planned enough.””
The silence afterward was brutal.
I looked at my father.
“Why didn’t Mom tell you?””
Sofia answered.
“She tried.””
My heart broke.
“She tried many times.””
Marcus looked down.
“Why didn’t I know?””
“Because someone made sure you didn’t.””
Nobody needed to say who.
Then Sofia said something that made Vanessa completely collapse.
“There is one thing you still don’t know.””
Marcus looked up.
“What?””
“Your wife wasn’t the only person Vanessa tried to remove.””
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
Sofia was silent.
Then:
“Daniel.””
Marcus froze.
“What about him?””
“Daniel discovered everything.””
The room went silent.
“He helped your mother collect proof.””
Marcus whispered:
“Then why did he disappear?””
Sofia answered:
“Because Vanessa threatened him.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You did?””
“No.””
But her voice was weak.
Sofia continued.
“She told Daniel that if he exposed her, she would destroy your reputation and make sure nobody believed him.””
Marcus looked devastated.
“And he left?””
“No.””
Sofia’s voice became quiet.
“He didn’t leave.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He was forced out.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Where is he?””
Sofia hesitated.
Then said:
“He’s been waiting for the right moment to come back.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because I realized something.
This wasn’t the end of the truth.
It was the beginning.
May you like
And then Sofia said the words that changed everything.
“He’s outside your house right now.””
