Chapter 1: The Camera Facing the Wall

“Dad… the money was stolen.””

Those five words shattered the quiet of the brightest room in the house.

Marcus had walked into the living room expecting an ordinary afternoon. He expected to drop his keys on the marble counter, ask Maya about school, and hear her complain about homework like she always did. He did not expect to stand in front of his fifteen-year-old daughter holding a crumpled tuition notice while her face was covered in tears.

The luxury living room looked exactly the same as it had every day. Sunlight poured through the tall windows. The cream-colored sofa sat perfectly arranged. A designer coffee table held a vase of fresh flowers Vanessa had bought two days earlier.

Everything looked peaceful.

Except for Maya.

She stood near the sofa with her school bag still hanging from one shoulder, her braided hair slightly messy from shaking her head over and over. Her fingers gripped the strap of her bag so tightly her knuckles had turned pale.

Marcus looked down at the tuition notice again.

Then he looked back at his daughter.

“Maya,” he said, his voice low but firm, “I gave you the tuition money. Why didn’t you pay?””

Her lips trembled.

“I tried, Dad…”

The sound of her voice almost broke his frustration. Almost.

Marcus had worked hard his entire life to make sure Maya never had to experience the struggles he knew growing up. Every extra shift, every late night, every sacrifice had one purpose.

Her future.

He stepped closer, still holding the paper.

“The school called me twice,” Marcus said.

“Twice, Maya. They said your tuition hasn’t been paid.””

Maya wiped her cheeks quickly, but more tears replaced the ones she removed.

“I know.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“I was scared.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Scared of what?””

Maya looked down.

“Of you thinking I lost it.””

The words landed harder than he expected.

Marcus opened his mouth, but no answer came immediately.

Behind him, Vanessa stood near the kitchen entrance.

She had been silent the entire time.

That was unusual.

Vanessa was usually the first person to step into any disagreement. She was calm, polished, and always seemed to know exactly what to say. Her beige blouse was perfectly pressed, her hair carefully styled, her expression controlled.

But now she only watched.

Marcus noticed.

“Vanessa,” he said, turning slightly.

“Did you know about this?””

Her eyes moved toward him.

“About what?””

“Maya’s tuition.””

A pause.

Only a second.

But Marcus noticed.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“I thought she was handling it.””

Maya immediately looked up.

“I wasn’t handling it. I told you the money was missing.””

The room became still.

Marcus slowly turned back to his daughter.

“You told Vanessa?””

Maya nodded.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Three days ago.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa again.

“And what did you say?””

Vanessa’s expression tightened.

“I told her to calm down.””

“And?””

“I said we would figure it out.””

Maya’s voice cracked.

“But you never did.””

Vanessa sighed softly.

“Maya, don’t make this bigger than it is.””

Marcus looked at her.

The sentence bothered him.

Not because of the words.

Because of how quickly she said them.

“This is tuition money,” Marcus replied.

“This is not something small.””

“I know that,” Vanessa said.

“Do you?””

The question hung in the air.

Maya stepped forward, shaking her head.

“Dad, I’m telling the truth.””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

He wanted to believe her.

But a part of him was confused. The money had been placed on the living room table. The house had security cameras. Everyone knew where it was.

Nothing disappeared without a reason.

Maya reached toward the phone in Marcus’s hand.

“Dad…”

Her voice became quieter.

“Check the camera.””

Marcus froze.

Vanessa’s face changed.

It was subtle.

A small movement around her eyes.

A quick tightening of her jaw.

But Marcus saw it.

He unlocked his phone and opened the home security app.

The three of them stood there watching the loading circle spin.

Maya held her breath.

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus noticed that too.

The footage appeared.

A timeline from the day the money disappeared.

He tapped the recording.

The living room appeared on the screen.

The same room.

The same table.

The same place where the tuition envelope had been sitting.

Marcus dragged his finger across the timeline.

“Here,” he whispered.

The footage jumped forward.

And then he stopped.

His expression changed.

The camera angle was wrong.

The security camera that always faced the table was now pointed somewhere else.

At a blank wall.

Marcus slowly leaned closer to the phone.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Maya looked between her father and the screen.

Vanessa’s breathing became faster.

Marcus looked at the footage again.

The camera wasn’t broken.

It wasn’t disconnected.

It had been moved.

His thumb stopped moving.

Then the phone vibrated in his hand.

A new notification appeared.

May you like

Marcus looked down.

And the name on the screen made his face go completely still.
