Chapter 13: The Person Behind the Lies
Marcus stared into the hallway.
The person stepped forward slowly.
The bright living room lights flickered once more, casting shadows across the walls.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Maya whispered the name.
“Uncle Raymond?””
Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.
Raymond stood there calmly.
The same man who had brought birthday gifts for Maya.
The same man who had sat at their dinner table.
The same man Marcus had trusted enough to call family.
But now he stood in the middle of the house with a cold expression on his face.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“No.””
Raymond looked at her.
“Yes.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“What are you doing here?””
Raymond looked around the room.
“Finishing what should have been finished years ago.””
Marcus’s hands tightened into fists.
“You stole my daughter’s tuition money?””
Raymond smiled slightly.
“That’s what you think this is about?””
Maya looked at him.
“You made me think I lost it.””
Raymond looked at her.
For a second, something almost like guilt appeared.
Then it disappeared.
“You were never supposed to be involved.””
Marcus immediately moved closer to Maya.
“Don’t talk about my daughter like that.””
Raymond looked at Marcus.
“You still don’t understand.””
“No.””
Marcus’s voice was calm.
“You’re going to explain.””
Raymond laughed softly.
“You always were the protector.””
“And you always were the person I trusted.””
The words landed.
Raymond looked away.
That small reaction told Marcus everything.
He had expected anger.
Denial.
A fight.
But Raymond looked ashamed.
Marcus noticed.
“Why?””
Raymond didn’t answer.
“Why would you do this?””
The room went silent.
Finally, Raymond spoke.
“Because I was trying to fix something.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Everyone says that.””
Raymond looked at him.
“You think Vanessa was the only one carrying secrets?””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
Marcus looked between them.
“You two knew each other’s secrets.””
Raymond said nothing.
That was enough.
Maya looked at Vanessa.
“How long?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Years.””
Maya stepped back.
“You all knew things about my life.””
Her voice cracked.
“And nobody told me.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Maya—”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I need to understand.””
Raymond looked at her.
“You deserve the truth.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“You don’t get to decide what she deserves.””
Raymond nodded.
“You’re right.””
For the first time, he looked genuinely regretful.
“But she deserves it anyway.””
He walked toward the table.
Marcus blocked him.
“Stop.””
Raymond stopped.
“I’m not here to hurt her.””
“You already did.””
Raymond looked at Maya.
“I know.””
The honesty was unexpected.
Marcus didn’t lower his guard.
“Start talking.””
Raymond looked at the hidden phone on the table.
“The recording showed part of the truth.””
“What truth?””
Raymond looked at Vanessa.
“The money was never stolen.””
Maya frowned.
“What?””
Raymond nodded.
“The envelope was empty before anyone touched it.””
Marcus froze.
“No.””
“Yes.””
He pointed toward Vanessa.
“She knew.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Marcus turned.
“Is that true?””
A long silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
Maya looked shocked.
“You knew there was no money?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I opened it because I received a message.””
“What message?””
Vanessa looked at Raymond.
“A message saying if I didn’t find the document, they would expose everything.””
Marcus stared.
“And Raymond?””
Raymond sighed.
“I found out someone was using Vanessa.””
“So you helped?””
“Yes.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“You helped her lie.””
“I thought I could control the situation.””
“You couldn’t.””
“No.””
Raymond looked down.
“I couldn’t.””
The admission was quiet.
Maya sat down slowly.
“So my tuition…”
Marcus looked at her.
“Maya.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her eyes filled.
“I need to know.””
Raymond answered.
“The money was moved before it reached the envelope.””
Marcus looked confused.
“By who?””
Raymond didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Someone who had access to the account.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“Who?””
Raymond looked directly at him.
“You.””
The room went silent.
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“The account wasn’t only connected to you.””
Raymond continued.
“Someone created a transfer authorization.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Raymond looked at him.
“That’s why they needed the birth record.””
Maya looked confused.
“What does my birth record have to do with money?””
Raymond took a breath.
“Because the person behind this wanted access to something that belonged to you.””
Marcus felt his heartbeat increase.
“What belonged to her?””
Raymond looked at Maya.
“An inheritance.””
Nobody spoke.
Maya stared.
“What inheritance?””
Raymond looked at Vanessa.
Then Marcus.
“The one your daughter never knew existed.””
Before Marcus could respond, his phone buzzed.
A new message.
One sentence.
No number.
No name.
Just words.
*You finally know the truth. Now ask who Maya’s real guardian is.*
Marcus looked up.
Slowly.
May you like
Because the question was impossible.
And terrifying.
