Chapter 8: The Person Nobody Suspected

Marcus watched the screen.

He couldn’t blink.

He couldn’t move.

The video continued playing.

The person walked into the living room slowly.

They looked around.

They knew the house.

They knew where the cameras were.

They knew exactly what they were doing.

Maya whispered:

“Dad…”

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because the person on the screen was impossible.

Not because he didn’t recognize them.

Because he did.

Vanessa looked away.

She already knew.

Marcus stopped the video.

His hand trembled slightly.

“No.””

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Maya looked at him.

“Who is it?””

Marcus stared at the frozen image.

Someone standing near the table.

Someone he trusted.

Someone who had been welcomed into their home.

“I need to know,” Maya said.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know?””

Her silence answered.

Maya stepped back.

“You knew?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not everything.””

“But you knew something.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

Marcus turned away.

“How long?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I found out after the money was gone.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I was trying to understand.””

“You had my daughter crying for days.””

“I know.””

“You watched her think she failed.””

Vanessa broke down.

“I know.””

Marcus looked at her.

For the first time, he didn’t see a villain.

He saw someone who made choices.

Bad choices.

Painful choices.

Choices that hurt people.

The phone rang again.

Andre.

Marcus answered immediately.

“You knew.””

Andre didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

“Who else knows?””

“You, Vanessa, and now Maya.””

Marcus looked at the video.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Vanessa asked me not to.””

Marcus turned toward her.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“You asked him?””

She nodded.

“Why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because I was ashamed.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Shame doesn’t protect a family.””

“I know.””

“No. You don’t.””

His voice became stronger.

“You protected yourself.””

The words hurt.

Vanessa didn’t argue.

Because she knew.

Maya walked toward the phone.

“Who is it?””

Marcus looked at her.

Then back at the screen.

“We need to see the whole video.””

He continued playback.

The person on the recording approached the table.

They picked up the envelope.

But they didn’t leave immediately.

They opened it.

They removed something.

Not money.

A piece of paper.

Marcus frowned.

“What is that?””

Andre answered through the phone.

“The reason all of this happened.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What was inside?””

She whispered:

“A document.””

“What document?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“A document that could ruin someone.””

Maya’s eyes widened.

“Whose?””

Nobody answered.

The video continued.

The person folded the paper.

Then placed the envelope back.

But before leaving, they looked directly toward the camera.

Like they knew it was there.

Like they knew someone would eventually watch.

Then they reached up.

The footage ended.

The screen went black.

Marcus stared.

“What happened next?””

Andre replied:

“They turned the camera.””

Marcus looked at the wall.

The blank wall.

The image that started everything.

“Why?””

“Because they didn’t want you seeing the rest.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Then show me the rest.””

Andre was quiet.

“There is a problem.””

“What problem?””

“The backup file only saved part of the recording.””

Marcus frowned.

“How much?””

“Enough to identify the person.””

“And?””

“Not enough to prove why they took the document.””

Marcus looked at the phone.

“So we know who.””

“Yes.””

“But not why.””

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

Maya looked at the screen.

“What was the document?””

Vanessa slowly answered.

“A birth record.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“A birth record connected to Maya.””

Maya froze.

Her face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“What does my daughter’s birth record have to do with any of this?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

Then whispered:

“Something I should have told you years ago.””

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

“What?””

May you like

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Your daughter’s story isn’t exactly what you think it is.””
