Chapter 3: The Truth Hidden in the Timeline

Marcus didn’t move.

Maya noticed the change in his face before anyone else.

“Dad?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

“What did it say?”” Vanessa asked.

Her voice was too fast.

Too interested.

Marcus looked at her.

The question alone told him something.

Vanessa had never asked what a random message said before.

Not like this.

“Why do you care?””

She blinked.

“I’m just asking.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You’re worried.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“I’m worried because you’re treating me like a suspect.””

Maya stood up.

“Dad, what did the message say?””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at the phone.

He hated what he was about to do.

But he knew secrets only grew bigger when people protected them.

He read it aloud.

“The camera didn’t move by itself.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Maya covered her mouth.

Marcus continued.

“That’s it.””

“Who sent it?”” Maya asked.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa immediately said, “Someone is trying to cause problems.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You believe that pretty quickly.””

“Because it’s obvious.””

“Is it?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Marcus, think about this. Someone sends a mysterious message, and suddenly you believe it?””

“No.””

He held up the phone.

“I believe evidence.””

He reopened the security app.

The footage was still paused.

The wall.

The shadow.

The missing money.

All of it sat on the screen.

Marcus walked toward the table where the tuition envelope had been placed.

He touched the surface.

Maya watched him.

“What are you doing?””

“Thinking.””

Marcus looked around the room.

“The money was here.””

He pointed.

“The camera was here.””

Then he looked toward the security camera mounted high in the corner.

“And now it’s here.””

The camera faced the wall.

A deliberate choice.

Someone wanted the table hidden.

Marcus took a deep breath.

“Whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing.””

Vanessa laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

“That sounds dramatic.””

Marcus turned.

“Does it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you’re acting like this is some kind of crime investigation.””

Marcus stared at her.

“My daughter’s education money disappeared from my house.””

Nobody answered.

Maya looked down.

The pain on her face was worse than anger.

Marcus noticed.

He walked back toward her.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked up.

“For what?””

“For making you feel like I didn’t trust you.””

Her eyes filled again.

“I just didn’t want you and Vanessa to fight.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You were protecting us?””

Maya nodded.

A painful silence followed.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Maya, you should have come to me first.””

Maya looked at her.

“I did.””

Vanessa’s face froze.

“I mean—”

“You said we would figure it out.””

Maya’s voice shook.

“But you acted like I was lying.””

Marcus looked between them.

Something about that moment stayed with him.

Not because of what was said.

Because of what wasn’t.

Vanessa didn’t apologize.

She didn’t comfort Maya.

She only defended herself.

Marcus picked up his phone again.

“I’m checking every recording.””

Vanessa immediately reacted.

“Every recording?””

“Yes.””

“Marcus, that’s unnecessary.””

“Why?””

“Because it’s private.””

He stared at her.

“The security system in my house is private?””

The question made her quiet.

Marcus opened the camera settings.

He reviewed the recordings from the previous days.

The living room.

The hallway.

The front entrance.

The kitchen.

Everything looked normal.

Until he reached the day before the money disappeared.

He stopped.

Maya noticed.

“What?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He rewound.

There was movement near the camera.

Not after the money went missing.

Before.

Someone had approached it.

Someone had stood directly beneath it.

The video quality was clear enough to show a hand reaching upward.

Marcus zoomed in.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Stop.””

The word came out before she could control it.

Everyone looked at her.

Her eyes widened.

She realized what she had done.

Marcus slowly turned the phone toward her.

“Why?””

Vanessa didn’t speak.

Maya looked terrified.

Marcus pressed play.

The footage continued.

The hand moved toward the camera.

The screen froze again.

Marcus stared.

Because now he knew something important.

The person in the recording wasn’t trying to hide from the camera.

They were trying to control what the camera saw.

Marcus lifted his eyes toward Vanessa.

And then the security app suddenly refreshed.

A new file appeared.

A recording Marcus had never seen before.

Created on the exact day the tuition money disappeared.

He tapped it.

The video began loading.

Vanessa took one step backward.

And on the screen, before the footage even appeared, a name was displayed in the file details.
