Chapter 12: The Recording That Changed Everything
Nobody moved.
The video continued.
Vanessa stood near the table.
The tuition envelope was in her hand.
But she wasn’t alone.
A second person stood beside her.
The angle was different.
Not from the security cameras.
A hidden recording.
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
Maya stepped closer.
“Who is that?””
The person’s face was partially hidden.
But their voice was clear.
They were talking to Vanessa.
“You understand what happens if you don’t cooperate.””
Vanessa in the video looked terrified.
“I told you I don’t have it.””
The person replied:
“You’re lying.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
The color drained from her face.
She remembered.
She knew.
Maya watched her.
“You talked to them?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer broke something.
Marcus closed his eyes for a moment.
“How long?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Since before the money disappeared.””
Maya stepped away.
“So all this time…”
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
Maya shook her head.
“You were scared.””
Vanessa couldn’t deny it.
Marcus continued watching.
The person in the video moved closer.
“You have until tomorrow.””
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“I don’t have what you want.””
The person leaned forward.
“Then someone else will suffer.””
The video ended.
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“What did they want?””
Vanessa sat down.
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
She looked up.
“No.””
“Then tell me.””
Vanessa looked at Maya.
Then at Marcus.
“They wanted the birth record.””
Marcus froze.
“Why?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I never knew.””
Elijah spoke quietly.
“I do.””
Everyone turned.
Elijah looked at the floor.
“The record proves Maya’s identity.””
Marcus frowned.
“She’s my daughter.””
“Yes.””
“Then why would anyone care?””
Elijah looked at him.
“Because someone wants to replace the truth.””
Maya looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Elijah took a breath.
“It means someone has been trying to rewrite your life.””
Marcus stared.
“Who?””
Elijah didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at the hidden phone.
“The person who recorded that video wanted you to find it.””
Marcus picked up the phone.
“Why?””
“Because they want everyone fighting each other.””
Marcus looked around the room.
The lies.
The fear.
The accusations.
The broken trust.
It suddenly felt intentional.
A plan.
Someone wanted this family divided.
Maya whispered:
“So the money wasn’t the real target.””
“No,” Elijah said.
Marcus looked at him.
“What was?””
Elijah’s eyes moved toward Maya.
“Her.””
Maya went still.
Marcus immediately stepped closer to her.
“No one is touching my daughter.””
Elijah nodded.
“That’s why you need to understand.””
The security system suddenly shut off.
Every screen went black.
The lights flickered.
Vanessa gasped.
Marcus grabbed Maya’s hand.
“Stay behind me.””
A sound came from the hallway.
A slow footstep.
Then another.
Someone was inside.
Elijah looked toward the darkness.
“They came back.””
Marcus moved forward.
“Who?””
The hallway remained empty.
Then a voice came from the shadows.
“You should have left the past buried.””
Marcus stopped.
He knew that voice.
Everyone did.
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
Maya whispered:
“No…”
The person stepped into the light.
And Marcus realized the person who had stolen the tuition money…
the person who had moved the camera…
May you like
the person who had been controlling everything…
was someone he never thought he would have to fear.
