Chapter 10: The Person Standing in the Doorway

Marcus turned slowly.

Every muscle in his body tightened.

The hallway behind him was supposed to be empty.

The security notification had been clear.

Motion detected.

Inside the house.

Maya grabbed the edge of the sofa.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Nobody spoke.

Then a voice came from the doorway.

“Marcus.””

The sound of that voice changed everything.

Marcus froze.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he knew it.

A person stepped into the bright living room.

An older Black man.

Gray at his temples.

Wearing a dark jacket.

His face carried years of regret.

Marcus stared.

“No.””

The man stopped.

“I know you don’t want to see me.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“You’re supposed to be dead.””

Maya looked between them.

“What?””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

The man took one step forward.

“My name is Elijah.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Then back at Elijah.

“You lied to me.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Marcus…”

“No.””

His voice was sharp.

“You told me there was no one.””

Elijah looked down.

“She wasn’t the only one keeping secrets.””

Maya stood completely still.

Her eyes moved from Marcus to Elijah.

“Who is he?””

Nobody answered.

That silence hurt her more than anything.

Marcus walked forward.

“You need to leave.””

Elijah nodded slowly.

“I understand.””

“Now.””

“But before I go, you need to know why I came.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

He pointed toward the room.

“Everyone has a reason. Everyone has a secret. Everyone thinks they’re protecting someone.””

Elijah looked at Maya.

“I came for her.””

Marcus immediately stepped between them.

“No.””

Elijah stopped.

“I’m not here to hurt her.””

“You don’t get to say that.””

“I know.””

The older man’s voice became quiet.

“I know I lost the right.””

Maya looked confused.

“Dad?””

Marcus didn’t take his eyes off Elijah.

“Go upstairs.””

“No.””

“Maya.””

“I’m done going upstairs.””

Her voice shook.

“I’m done being the person everyone protects while they hide my life from me.””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

He wanted to argue.

But he couldn’t.

Because she was right.

Elijah looked at Maya.

“You deserve the truth.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Please don’t.””

Elijah turned toward her.

“You had years to tell her.””

The words hurt.

Marcus noticed Vanessa didn’t fight back.

That scared him more.

“What truth?”” Marcus asked.

Elijah reached into his jacket.

Marcus immediately reacted.

“Don’t.””

Elijah stopped.

Slowly, he removed a folded document.

Not a weapon.

Paper.

He placed it on the table.

“The original record.””

Marcus stared.

“You have another copy?””

Elijah nodded.

“The one that was hidden.””

Maya stepped closer.

“Hidden by who?””

Nobody answered.

Elijah looked at Marcus.

“By people who thought they could decide your daughter’s future.””

Marcus picked up the document.

His hands were tense.

He unfolded it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Again.

The same expression.

Shock.

Maya saw it.

“Dad.””

Marcus looked up.

“I don’t know how to explain this.””

“Try.””

He looked at Elijah.

“What are you?””

Elijah swallowed.

“I’m your wife’s father.””

The room went silent.

Maya looked at Vanessa.

Then Elijah.

Then Marcus.

“Her father?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Marcus stared.

“You told me your father passed away.””

Vanessa’s face broke.

“I thought he did.””

Elijah looked away.

“I disappeared.””

“Why?””

The question came from Maya.

Elijah looked at her.

“Because I made a terrible choice.””

“What choice?””

He took a breath.

“One that affected your whole life.””

Marcus looked back at the document.

“And the tuition money?””

Elijah’s expression changed.

“That wasn’t about tuition.””

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

“What does that mean?””

“The money was bait.””

Maya’s face changed.

“Bait for what?””

Elijah looked toward the security camera.

“The person who took it wanted you looking in the wrong direction.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“You know who took it.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Elijah hesitated.

Then said:

“Someone who has been close to this family for years.””

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

Elijah looked at her.

“Yes.””

Marcus’s phone buzzed.

A message.

Another security alert.

He opened it.

A new video file had appeared.

Timestamped moments ago.

Marcus pressed play.

The camera showed the front entrance.

The person who had entered.

Elijah.

But then the footage continued.

Another person appeared outside.

Waiting.

Watching.

Marcus leaned closer.

Maya whispered:

“Who is that?””

The person outside lifted their head toward the camera.

And Marcus recognized them.

May you like

His blood ran cold.

Because the person watching the house was someone who had been sitting at their dinner table only days earlier.
