Chapter 11: The Secret Meeting

Marcus replayed the footage.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

He kept hoping his eyes were wrong.

They weren’t.

The person outside was real.

And the person standing near the front gate was someone he trusted.

Someone he welcomed.

Someone who knew the family.

Vanessa saw his face.

She already knew.

“Who?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Maya looked at him.

“Dad.””

He placed the phone down.

“It’s someone we know.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

“Did you know?””

Her silence returned.

That silence was becoming its own confession.

Marcus stepped back.

“How many secrets are there in this house?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I was trying to handle it.””

“You keep saying that.””

“I didn’t know it would become this.””

“What did you think would happen?””

She had no answer.

Elijah looked at Marcus.

“She wasn’t the only person hiding things.””

Marcus turned.

“Then start talking.””

Elijah nodded.

“I should have come sooner.””

“Yes.””

“I should have told the truth years ago.””

“Yes.””

“But I was afraid.””

Marcus stared.

“Everyone was afraid.””

He pointed around the room.

“And Maya was the one paying for it.””

Nobody responded.

Elijah looked down.

“You’re right.””

The admission surprised Marcus.

Then Elijah continued.

“The person outside the house is connected to the missing document.””

“Who are they?””

“I can’t say.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You walked into my house, told my daughter her life was built on secrets, and now you can’t say?””

Elijah looked at him.

“Because if I say the name without proof, they will destroy what evidence remains.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Evidence.””

“Yes.””

“What evidence?””

Elijah looked toward the phone.

“The original recording.””

Marcus frowned.

“What recording?””

“The one showing why the document was taken.””

Vanessa suddenly looked up.

“Elijah.””

Marcus noticed.

“What?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Nothing.””

“No.””

Marcus pointed.

“You know.””

She looked away.

“Maya…”

Maya interrupted.

“Stop.””

Her voice cracked.

“Please.””

Everyone looked at her.

“I don’t care about secrets anymore.””

She wiped her tears.

“I care about answers.””

The room became quiet.

Elijah looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

Maya looked at him.

“You don’t even know me.””

The words hurt him.

But he accepted them.

“You’re right.””

Marcus softened slightly.

“Maya…”

She shook her head.

“I need to hear it.””

Elijah nodded.

“The recording was made before you were born.””

Maya froze.

Marcus looked confused.

“Before?””

“Yes.””

“What does it show?””

Elijah looked at Vanessa.

Then at Marcus.

“It shows the reason your daughter’s records were changed.””

Maya’s face went pale.

“Changed because of me?””

“No.””

Elijah stepped closer.

“Because of someone else.””

The phone suddenly rang.

Everyone jumped.

Unknown number.

Marcus answered.

A voice spoke immediately.

“You brought him back.””

Marcus looked at Elijah.

The voice continued.

“You were warned.””

Marcus tightened his grip.

“Who is this?””

“You’re closer than you think.””

“Show yourself.””

A small laugh.

Then:

“I already did.””

The call ended.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Maya whispered:

“What does that mean?””

Then the security system chimed.

Another alert.

This time from the living room camera.

Marcus opened it.

The footage showed the room they were standing in.

Live.

They were being watched.

And the camera angle was different.

Someone had moved it again.

Marcus looked toward the camera.

Then toward Elijah.

Then Vanessa.

Someone inside the house had access.

Someone had been watching them the entire time.

Elijah whispered:

“They’re still here.””

Marcus immediately looked toward the hallway.

Every door.

Every shadow.

Every corner.

Then he saw it.

A small object on the floor.

A phone.

Not his.

Not Vanessa’s.

Not Maya’s.

A second phone.

Marcus picked it up.

The screen was already unlocked.

A video was open.

A recording from earlier that day.

Marcus pressed play.

The footage showed Vanessa standing alone in the living room.

Holding the tuition envelope.

May you like

But this time…

someone else was standing beside her.
