Chapter 7: The Voice Behind the Phone

Marcus held the phone against his ear.

The entire room waited.

Maya stood beside the sofa, frozen between fear and confusion. Vanessa sat with both hands locked together, staring at the floor like she already knew the voice on the other end.

Marcus noticed.

“You know who this is.””

Vanessa looked up.

“No.””

But the answer lacked conviction.

The voice on the phone spoke again.

“You need to listen carefully, Marcus.””

Marcus tightened his grip.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Andre.””

Vanessa’s face changed instantly.

Not slightly.

Completely.

Marcus saw it.

Maya saw it.

And this time, Vanessa couldn’t hide it.

“Vanessa,” Marcus said quietly, “who is Andre?””

She didn’t respond.

The voice continued.

“I know what happened to the money.””

Marcus looked toward the phone.

“Then tell me.””

“Not over the phone.””

Marcus frowned.

“You called me.””

“Because you needed to know that your wife isn’t the person you should be blaming.””

Vanessa stood up.

“Stop.””

The word came out sharp.

Marcus turned toward her.

“You know him.””

Vanessa looked desperate.

“Marcus, please.””

“Please what?””

Her eyes filled.

“Don’t do this in front of Maya.””

Maya immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“I’m tired of being protected from the truth.””

Her voice shook.

“I’m the reason this started.””

Marcus looked at her.

“No, Maya.””

“Yes.””

She pointed toward the phone.

“My tuition money disappeared.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“I was scared.””

Then at Marcus.

“You were angry.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“And everyone kept deciding what I could handle.””

The words hit both adults.

Marcus lowered his gaze.

He knew she was right.

The voice on the phone interrupted.

“Maya?””

Marcus looked at the phone.

“How do you know her name?””

Silence.

Then Andre answered.

“Because I know more about your family than you think.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Andre’s voice became heavier.

“It’s a warning.””

Marcus walked away from the others.

“Start talking.””

Andre sighed.

“Three weeks ago, Vanessa received a letter.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

“What kind of letter?””

“A demand.””

“From who?””

“From someone who wanted money.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Stop.””

Marcus ignored her.

“How much?””

Andre paused.

“Enough to destroy your family.””

The words sat in the room.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“You were being threatened?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.””

Maya covered her mouth.

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because I thought I could fix it.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You always say that.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“By lying?””

“I was scared.””

The honesty surprised him.

For years, Vanessa had always appeared unbreakable.

But now she looked like someone who had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

Marcus turned back to the phone.

“Who was threatening her?””

Andre didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“The same person who took the tuition money.””

Maya gasped.

Marcus went still.

“You know who?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Another pause.

Then Andre said:

“Someone close to you.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus felt his anger rise.

“Say the name.””

“I can’t.””

“You called me.””

“I called you because you need to see the evidence first.””

Marcus looked toward the folder on the table.

The documents.

The missing money.

The camera footage.

Everything was becoming connected.

“What evidence?””

Andre replied:

“The security backup.””

Marcus looked at his phone.

“What?””

“Your cameras have a backup system.””

“I know.””

“No. You know the public recordings. Not the hidden backup.””

Marcus stared.

Vanessa looked suddenly alarmed.

“What are you talking about?””

Andre continued.

“The camera didn’t stop recording when it turned toward the wall.””

Marcus’s heart skipped.

“What?””

“The camera stored another angle.””

Marcus looked at the security app.

“That’s impossible.””

“It isn’t.””

Andre’s voice lowered.

“Someone changed the camera direction. But they forgot about the backup.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus opened the security settings.

His fingers moved quickly.

Searching.

Looking.

Then he found something.

A folder.

Hidden.

No label.

No recent access.

His breathing slowed.

Maya leaned closer.

“What is it?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He opened it.

A video file appeared.

Created on the same day the money disappeared.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She whispered:

“Don’t.””

That one word stopped him.

Not because he trusted her.

Because he realized something.

Vanessa wasn’t afraid of the video.

She was afraid of what it would reveal.

Marcus pressed play.

The screen loaded.

The first few seconds showed the living room.

The table.

The envelope.

Then the door opened.

Someone walked in.

Marcus leaned closer.

Maya held her breath.

And then the person stepped into view.

Marcus froze.

Because it wasn’t Vanessa.

May you like

And it wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone he knew.
