Chapter 6: The Secret Vanessa Buried

Marcus had faced difficult moments before.

He had lost jobs.

He had buried family members.

He had stood in hospital rooms and waited for answers he was afraid to hear.

But nothing prepared him for the feeling of reading a truth that had been sitting inside his own house.

He looked at the document again.

The words didn’t change.

The signature didn’t disappear.

The date remained exactly the same.

Maya watched her father’s face.

“Dad…”

Marcus slowly placed the paper down.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“I can explain.””

Again.

That sentence.

The same sentence people used when the truth had already escaped.

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“No more explanations before the truth.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

She looked at Maya.

That was the first thing she did.

She looked at Maya.

And Marcus saw it.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“Maya shouldn’t hear this.””

Maya stood straighter.

“Why?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Why shouldn’t I?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“She’s involved.””

Maya’s face changed.

“Involved in what?””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

Her hands trembled.

“I made a mistake.””

Marcus laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“A mistake?””

He tapped the document.

“This says you signed legal paperwork.””

“I was desperate.””

“For what?””

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus stepped closer.

“For what, Vanessa?””

She covered her face for a moment.

Then whispered:

“Money.””

Maya looked shocked.

“You needed money?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Years ago.””

Marcus stared.

“You told me you had savings.””

“I did.””

“Then where did it go?””

Silence.

The answer came slowly.

“I lost it.””

Maya looked confused.

“How?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Investments.””

Marcus waited.

“That’s it?””

“No.””

Her voice became smaller.

“I borrowed money.””

The room went quiet.

Marcus felt his anger changing.

Not disappearing.

Changing.

Because there was something worse than the debt.

The lie.

“How long?””

Vanessa looked up.

“What?””

“How long have you been hiding this?””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus already knew.

“Years?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Yes.””

Maya backed away.

“You lied to us for years?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I was trying to fix it.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

Maya wiped her tears.

“You just hid it.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Marcus picked up the document.

“But what does this have to do with my daughter’s tuition?””

Vanessa looked at him.

And for the first time, she looked completely defeated.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus stared.

“You don’t know?””

“I moved the envelope because I thought…”

She stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa looked toward the security camera.

“I thought someone had found out.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“Found out what?””

Before Vanessa could answer, the phone on the table rang.

Everyone froze.

The screen lit up.

Unknown number.

Marcus looked at it.

Then looked at Vanessa.

She whispered:

“Don’t answer.””

Marcus reached for the phone.

“Why?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with fear.

“Because whoever is calling…”

The phone kept ringing.

“…knows about the money.””

Marcus pressed accept.

He raised the phone to his ear.

For three seconds, there was only silence.

Then a voice spoke.

A voice Marcus had never heard before.

May you like

And the first words made his entire body go still.

“Marcus, you’re asking the wrong person about the stolen tuition money…”
