Chapter 4: The File With Her Name
Marcus stared at the screen.
The loading circle spun slowly, almost like it was waiting for someone to decide whether they were ready to see the truth.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed normally.
The entire living room had become a place where every sound felt too loud—the hum of the air conditioner, the faint ticking of the wall clock, even the shaky breath leaving Maya’s lips.
Marcus looked at the file details again.
The name was still there.
Vanessa.
Not a nickname.
Not an unknown user.
Her name was attached to the recording.
Maya saw it too.
“Dad…”
Her voice was barely a whisper.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Marcus, wait.””
That was the first time she sounded afraid.
Not annoyed.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
Marcus slowly raised his eyes from the phone.
“Wait for what?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
He took a step toward her.
“For what, Vanessa?””
She looked away.
“I can explain.””
Maya’s face changed.
The words hurt her more than anger would have.
Explain.
Not deny.
Not laugh.
Explain.
“Explain what?”” Maya asked.
Vanessa looked at her.
“Maya—”
“No.””
The teenager shook her head.
“No, I want to know.””
Her voice trembled, but she didn’t look away.
“For three days, I thought I lost Dad’s money. I thought I messed everything up. I thought I was the problem.””
Marcus felt something tighten in his chest.
Maya continued.
“And you knew something?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I didn’t say that.””
“You didn’t have to.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked back at the phone.
He pressed play.
The recording opened.
The image appeared.
The same living room.
The same table.
The same camera angle.
But this time, the camera was still facing the table.
The tuition envelope was visible.
Marcus leaned closer.
The timestamp showed the morning before the money disappeared.
Vanessa was nowhere in the room.
Then the footage jumped forward.
A few minutes later, Vanessa walked in.
She was carrying a cup of coffee.
She looked around.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Marcus noticed.
She wasn’t walking like someone passing through a room.
She was checking it.
Vanessa sat on the sofa.
She placed her coffee down.
Then she looked directly toward the camera.
Maya covered her mouth.
“She knew.””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because he saw it too.
Vanessa knew exactly where the camera was.
The footage continued.
Vanessa stood up.
She walked toward the table.
The envelope was still there.
She reached toward it.
Marcus stopped the video.
His thumb froze.
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
“Marcus…”
He looked at her.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
Her eyes filled with panic.
“I wasn’t stealing anything.””
“Then why did you touch it?””
No answer.
Maya looked at Vanessa like she was seeing a stranger.
“You took it?””
Vanessa immediately turned.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Maya flinched.
Marcus noticed.
He noticed everything now.
Every pause.
Every movement.
Every word.
He played the video again.
Vanessa picked up the envelope.
She looked around.
Then she walked out of frame.
The recording ended minutes later.
Marcus stared at the black screen.
“Where did you take it?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I didn’t take the money.””
“You picked up the envelope.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Marcus almost laughed.
But there was no humor in it.
“Protect me?””
“Yes.””
“By taking my daughter’s tuition money?””
“I didn’t take the money!””
Her voice finally broke.
Maya stepped back.
The sudden emotion frightened her.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I moved the envelope.””
“Why?””
Silence.
Marcus waited.
Vanessa looked toward the floor.
“Because I found something inside.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“A letter.””
Maya frowned.
“What letter?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus stared.
“You don’t know?””
“I saw the envelope was open.””
“The tuition envelope?””
Vanessa nodded.
“There was something else inside.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“What kind of letter?””
Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she walked toward the sofa and picked up her phone.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes,” Marcus said.
“You should have.””
Her fingers shook as she unlocked her phone.
“There was a message attached to it.””
She opened her photos.
Then she stopped.
Marcus noticed.
“What?””
Vanessa looked terrified again.
“It’s gone.””
“What’s gone?””
“The picture.””
Maya looked confused.
“You took a picture?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“I wanted proof.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Proof of what?””
Vanessa looked at the three of them.
Then she whispered:
“Proof that someone was trying to destroy this family.””
Before Marcus could respond, the front door camera notification appeared on his phone.
A new alert.
Someone was standing outside.
Marcus looked down.
The screen showed the front entrance.
A person.
Waiting.
May you like
And in their hand was a folder.
A folder with Marcus’s name written across the front.
