Chapter 2: The Message Nobody Expected
Marcus stared at the notification.
For a moment, the anger disappeared.
Confusion replaced it.
Maya noticed immediately.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
The bright living room suddenly felt smaller.
The sunlight coming through the windows felt colder.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“What is it?””
Marcus locked the screen.
“Nothing.””
But Maya knew her father too well.
Marcus was not a man who said “nothing” when something was wrong.
He was the kind of person who noticed when a door was slightly open. The kind of person who remembered where everyone placed their belongings. The kind of person who could hear something was wrong just from the way someone said hello.
And right now, something was very wrong.
Maya lowered her voice.
“You saw something.””
Marcus looked at her.
“I said it’s nothing.””
She flinched.
Not because he yelled.
Because he didn’t.
His calm voice scared her more.
Vanessa walked closer.
“Marcus, maybe we should talk privately.””
He turned toward her.
“Why?””
Her eyebrows pulled together.
“Because Maya is upset.””
“She has a right to know what’s happening.””
Vanessa looked at Maya.
“Maya, sweetheart, maybe go upstairs for a minute.””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
Everyone looked at her.
Maya swallowed.
“I’m tired of people talking around me like I’m a child.””
Marcus studied his daughter.
Fifteen years old.
Still young.
But old enough to understand when adults were hiding something.
He nodded slowly.
“Stay.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened for a brief moment.
Then it disappeared.
“Fine.””
Marcus placed the phone on the table.
“Let’s start from the beginning.””
Maya sat on the edge of the sofa.
Marcus remained standing.
“Where did you last see the money?””
“On the table,” Maya said.
“The envelope was there after school.””
“What time?””
“About four.””
“And when did you notice it was gone?””
“Before dinner.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“And you were here?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Yes.””
“Doing what?””
“Working.””
“Where?””
“In the bedroom.””
Marcus nodded.
“Anyone else come into the house?””
“No.””
Maya looked toward Vanessa.
“You said you didn’t see anything.””
Vanessa looked offended.
“I didn’t.””
“But you knew the camera was there.””
The room became quiet.
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Maya looked at her father.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus picked up the phone again.
He opened the security footage.
“This camera has never moved.””
Vanessa immediately replied.
“Maybe it malfunctioned.””
Marcus looked at her.
“It doesn’t just turn.””
“Technology fails.””
“Not like that.””
The confidence in his voice changed the atmosphere.
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus zoomed in on the footage.
The camera showed nothing except the wall.
A blank, empty wall.
Minutes passed with no movement.
Then Marcus noticed something.
A shadow.
Very small.
Very quick.
He paused the video.
Maya leaned forward.
“What is that?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He replayed it.
The shadow appeared again.
A person had walked past the camera.
But the angle hid everything.
Only the movement was visible.
Vanessa took a step closer.
“See? Someone could have done anything.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Who?””
She hesitated.
“Anyone.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“I’m trying to help.””
Marcus stared at the screen.
For years, he had trusted Vanessa.
When they married, she had promised she wanted to be part of Maya’s life. Not replace Maya’s mother. Not erase the past.
Just be someone Maya could depend on.
And for a long time, Marcus believed she was.
But now, standing in the middle of their living room, watching a camera pointed at a wall, he felt something he hated feeling.
Doubt.
Maya quietly spoke.
“Dad?””
He looked at her.
“What?””
“I didn’t want to tell you because I thought you would be angry.””
Marcus softened.
“Maya, I’m not angry at you.””
She wiped her face.
“I just wanted you to believe me.””
Marcus walked over and hugged her.
“I do.””
Behind them, Vanessa watched.
Her expression was unreadable.
Then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Immediately, she rejected the call.
Marcus noticed.
“Who was that?””
“Nobody.””
“Maya’s tuition money disappears. The camera moves. And now you’re getting calls you don’t want to answer?””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You’re accusing me?””
“I asked a question.””
“You’re acting like I’m guilty.””
Marcus didn’t respond.
Because the truth was, he wasn’t sure what he believed anymore.
Vanessa grabbed her phone.
“I need some air.””
She turned toward the door.
“Maya stays here,” Marcus said.
Vanessa stopped.
Slowly, she looked back.
The calm mask she always wore was beginning to crack.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked nervous.
Not angry.
Not offended.
Nervous.
She opened her mouth to speak.
Then Marcus’s phone buzzed again.
This time, it wasn’t a notification.
It was a message.
From the same unknown number.
Marcus looked down.
May you like
His eyes moved across the screen.
And the first sentence made his stomach drop.
