Chapter 14: The Truth Written in Blood
Marcus read the message again.
Then again.
The words stayed the same.
Who Maya’s real guardian is.
His first reaction was anger.
Not confusion.
Not fear.
Anger.
He looked at Raymond.
“What does this mean?””
Raymond didn’t answer.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Answer me.””
Raymond looked at Maya.
Then away.
“I think you should hear it from Vanessa.””
Marcus turned.
Vanessa was crying silently.
“Maya…”
The teenager looked at her.
“What?””
Vanessa struggled to speak.
“There is something about your mother.””
Maya froze.
“My mom?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She wasn’t running away from you.””
Marcus looked confused.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“She was trying to protect you.””
The words hit harder than expected.
Maya’s eyes filled.
“Protect me from what?””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
“From people who wanted control of her family.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Raymond.
“No more vague answers.””
Raymond nodded.
“You’re right.””
He reached into his jacket and removed another folder.
“This is everything.””
Marcus took it.
Inside were documents.
Legal papers.
Bank records.
A letter.
A DNA report.
Marcus’s hands stopped.
The final page.
Maya noticed.
“What?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Vanessa whispered:
“It’s the truth.””
Maya walked closer.
Marcus didn’t want her to see.
But he also knew he couldn’t hide it anymore.
She looked down.
Her eyes moved.
Then stopped.
Her face changed.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Maya…”
She shook her head.
“No.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“This says…”
Her voice broke.
“This says my mother left me something.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“What?””
“An inheritance.””
Maya looked confused.
“But why didn’t I know?””
“Because someone hid it.””
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Raymond spoke.
“Your legal guardian.””
Maya looked up.
“What?””
Raymond pointed to the documents.
“Someone changed the paperwork.””
Marcus looked through the pages.
His eyes narrowed.
There was a signature.
A name.
A name he recognized.
His own.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I never signed this.””
Raymond nodded.
“I know.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
“Your signature was copied.””
The room became silent.
Maya looked at Marcus.
“Dad…”
Marcus felt sick.
Someone had used his identity.
Someone had manipulated everything.
The tuition money.
The documents.
The camera.
The secrets.
All of it.
“Who did this?”” Marcus asked.
Raymond looked at Vanessa.
Then at the doorway.
“No.””
Marcus followed his gaze.
The front door was open.
Nobody had noticed.
Someone had left.
Vanessa whispered:
“They were here.””
Marcus looked around.
The person who had entered.
The person who had exposed the truth.
Gone.
But something remained on the table.
A small envelope.
Marcus picked it up.
Inside was a single photograph.
He looked at it.
Then his face changed.
Maya saw.
“What is it?””
Marcus slowly turned the picture around.
It showed a woman.
Maya’s mother.
Standing beside someone.
Someone Marcus recognized.
Someone impossible.
Maya stared.
“Who is that?””
Marcus couldn’t speak.
May you like
Because the person standing beside Maya’s mother in the photograph…
was Marcus himself.
